California Grill Dinner Review [2026 Gluten Free & Food Allergy Options]

This gluten free dining experience took place in February 2026. It includes information about dairy free options, as well as fish/shellfish, peanut/tree nut, chicken/turkey & cabbage allergies.

Dinner at California Grill

California Grill, located at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, is a signature dining location that has long been a favorite for many Disney guests for its incredible views of the Magic Kingdom and for being able to watch the fireworks from the restaurant’s rooftop viewing area. While California Grill wouldn’t rank as our top signature restaurant at Disney, we do enjoy eating here on occasion, especially for some of our favorite dishes, including gluten free sushi. On this particular visit, we went to celebrate both my birthday and Valentine’s Day.

Atmosphere

The look and feel of California Grill is set to reflect a clean and modern design. We both like the geometric lighting and everything is bright with light wooden tones.

The restaurant is surrounded by large glass windows, and while this does give you sweeping views of Disney World and the greater Orlando area, we find that it really impacts the noise. If you’re dining in the main areas of California Grill, it can be quite noisy. We prefer to dine right around opening time for a bit of a quieter experience or ask to be seated in one of the restaurant’s many side rooms. We have been seated in those rooms on previous visits and found the experience to have a much more intimate quieter vibe.

That being said, we do find that the restaurant has reasonably good spacing between tables, which doesn’t make you feel too crammed in and can help with some of the noise issues too.

The Food

As a Disney owned and operated restaurant, you’ll find that California Grill offers an allergy-friendly menu for guests with special dietary needs. You can order directly from this menu with your server if it’s something that works for you and you feel comfortable with it, but you can also always talk directly to a chef about options, especially if you have multiple allergies.

On this occasion, we worked with our server on our order, and we watched her discuss our options with the chef directly, since it’s an open kitchen. Since we’ve dined at this location many times, we felt comfortable with this approach for this meal, but we always encourage you to use your comfort and judgement when ordering.

One of the things I love most about California Grill is its impressive wine list featuring California wines. If you enjoy great wines from Napa and Sonoma, for example, you’ll find ample options including options you can’t find anywhere else on Disney property.

I ordered the Silverado Winery Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a Disney family wine that was founded in 1981 by Ron and Diane Miller (Walt’s daughter) and Lillian Disney. I always enjoy Silverado wines, and this Cab was no exception. If you love a good hearty red wine that’s full bodied, this wine is for you.

Brandon got his favorite Sonoma Maple Bourbon Old Fashioned which features a bourbon from Sonoma County California. We really love how the beverage program at California Grill really leans into the California theme.

Our meal started with an included bread service. This included gluten free & allergy-friendly rolls with Tomato Confit and Butter. If you’re gluten free & dairy free, the Tomato Confit will be the option you get. Unfortunately, the restaurant does not carry non-dairy butter options.

Both Brandon and I personally prefer the tomato confit. The tomatoes in the olive oil with herbs give it an earthy, rich taste, and we both can’t get enough of this dipping sauce. The butter is also lovely for those who are dairy free, especially with the salt on top of it.

California Grill currently offers a 3 course fixed price meal. This means that you are ordering an appetizer, entree, and dessert. While we both miss the a la carte options that California Grill previously had, it does give us a chance to enjoy a variety of dishes. Additionally, California Grill really focuses on seasonal changes, so the menu in this review has changed. Some of the dishes we ordered may no longer be available.

For starters, I had to get sushi. It’s my go-to every time we dine at California Grill. While there are sushi dishes on the allergy-friendly menu, they aren’t always listed as GF. The restaurant does carry gluten free Tamari, and many rolls can be made GF (and even GFDF) if you ask. They also have different sushi rolls on the lounge/bar menu, so be sure to ask your server. On our visit, the Spicy Kazan Roll that I got was only on the lounge menu, but the chef said they could swap it out for other sushi options on the fixed price menu.

The Spicy Kazan Roll is one of my favorite rolls at California Grill. It includes Blue Crab, Ebi Shrimp, Bay Scallops, and Fireball Sauce. It can be modified GF by swapping out the soy sauce, and it’s marked safe for Milk and Peanut/Tree Nut Allergies on the restaurant’s allergy-friendly menu. This is a great gluten free and dairy free option if you’re a sushi fan.

This roll does have a spicy kick to it, but the seafood is super fresh, and the flavors overall just work so well together. This is a high recommend for seafood and sushi fans.

GF Seafood Stew at California Grill / Photo Taken by Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW

For my main dish, I ordered the Seafood Stew which is no longer on the restaurant’s menu. This was modified gluten free by omitting a sourdough bread. It contained dairy and could not be easily modified. This dish is a perfect example of an easy modification if you ask. They simply removed the bread component. I did have extra rolls so I didn’t miss out on having that as a part of the dish.

This was what I called fancy clam chowder. With clams and a beautifully cooked sablefish (aka Black Cod), the flavors were insanely rich and decadent. It was very seafood forward without tasting overly fishy, and the addition of the roasted potatoes and pancetta gave it lots of notes of savory, a bit sweet, and salty. I had no notes on this dish, and I’m definitely hoping they bring it back again. It was so good.

For Brandon’s entree, he got the a Modified Oak-grilled Filet of Beef with Mashed Potatoes. This portion of the dish is gluten free and you can modify this to be a gluten free & dairy free option too with vegetables and roasted potatoes. Brandon did order a non-GF side of kid’s mac & cheese that was safe for his food allergies.

Overall, he really enjoyed this dish, though it’s always a bummer when a signature restaurant doesn’t have a safe sauce option for a filet for Brandon. Other locations, like Topolino’s Terrace have sauces that do not contain chicken stock (which Brandon is allergic to), but California Grill did not on our visit. Still, he thought it was very tasty overall. If you’re a steak fan, this could be a good option for you.

Flourless Chocolate-Espresso Cake at California Grill

For my dessert, I ordered a gluten free, dairy free & vegan Flourless Chocolate-Espresso Cake with Spiced Chocolate Crémeux, Ancho Chile-Caramel Sauce, and Candied Nut Crumble. Sadly, this is also no longer on the restaurant’s menu, which is a bummer. This dessert was very inventive and had so many amazing flavors. I described it as Mexican Hot Chocolate in cake form.

The current menu does not seem to have any unique gluten free & plant-based desserts, so I do hope that California Grill goes back to an option like this again. Dessert in a fixed price meal, in my opinion, can be so hit or miss, and on our visit it was a complete hit. The current options look like a creme brûlée or sorbet, which is honestly a bummer for the price you pay for this meal.

Overall

Depending on the current menu at California Grill, this is either a hit for us or just so-so. We do tend to keep an eye on menu changes at this signature location and dine here when the options (especially dessert) are more in line with the flavors and types of foods we like. Still, we’ve never had a bad meal at California Grill, and you truly can’t beat the incredible views of the parks and resorts and the fireworks. If you’re looking for a nice option at the Monorail resorts or for a special occasion, California Grill could be a great option. We’re looking forward to fall updates, which tends to be the menu each year that we prefer.

Have you been to California Grill for dinner? What was your experience dining there gluten free or with other special dietary needs?
