Taste Up Foods — Sponsor — Dessert Party — Review

January 20, 2014 by Sarah No Comments

Taste Up Foods Gluten Free

As a silver sponsor of the 2nd Annual Special Diets Dessert Party weekend, Taste Up Foods supplied our guests with Strawberry Mini Pies called Crostallegra. Taste Up Foods focuses on high quality gluten free products made in Italy, as Italy’s Gluten Free market is more advanced than the United States. In fact, in Italy, the analysis of celiac disease and various levels of Gluten intolerance has been divided into approximately 16 levels of severity. Wow! It’s pretty amazing to see how a country that has tons of gluten based dishes really does focus on creating safe gluten free products. It was great to have some of their items at the Dessert Party Weekend. I wasn’t able to consume the strawberry mini pies, due to dairy in their products, but I heard lots of raves about the quality and taste of these goodies.

Recently, Taste Up Foods sent me samples of gluten free and dairy free cookies produced by their manufacturer Vidafree. This is a gluten free manufacturer in Italy. Unfortunately, these cookies are made in a facility with other products containing dairy, and we weren’t able to determine their safety for dairy allergy (though I’m told that Italy has equally strict guidelines for dairy and other food allergy testing) My family graciously offered to test taste the rest of the batch (they have such a hard job, right?!).

The cookies were a lemon biscuit — which is almost like a shortbread (minus the butter). You can smell a light lemony flavor on these cookies. I wish that I personally could have enjoyed these because my goodness they smelled amazing! Everyone said the texture was great and the flavor was subtle but good. They said the cookies weren’t overly lemony but delicious.

Overall, based on the reviews from my family and from the guests who enjoyed the Crostallegra I’d say that Taste Up Foods has some really great authentic Italian gluten free products. I’m still wowed that a country so heavily based in gluten can offer such strict testing and quality products. It’s very impressive!

You can find out more information about Taste Up Foods, including where to purchase their products, on their website.

*Note: Taste Up Foods provided items for this product review; however, this review and the opinions written here are my own thoughts.

2013 Lunch & Learn Recap

December 4, 2013 by Sarah 1 Comment
Raglan Road Lunch & Learn
http://www.raglanroad.com/

Perhaps the event that I was the most excited about during the Dessert Party Weekend that food allergy cookbook author Laurie Sadowski & I hosted was the Lunch & Learn with Laurie at Raglan Road Irish Pub presented by Magners Irish Cider and sponsored by Mary’s Gone Crackers. I mean anything that involves gluten free & dairy free fish and chips and hard cider is a win-win, right?

The lunch & learn was presented by Magners Irish Cider
and sponsored by Mary’s Gone Crackers

We were so thrilled that Raglan Road Irish Pub allowed us to use a portion of their restaurant for this lunch. It was a perfect place to host a Food & Wine Festival inspired meal with a gluten free & food allergy session added to it. Lorraine, Alan and the rest of the Raglan Road team worked with Laurie & I ahead of time to create a custom menu, based on their regular special diets menu offerings for the guests to choose from, as well as provide us with a really great space.

In addition to hosting the event at Raglan Road, we were thrilled to work with Magners Irish Cider, our title sponsor for this event. They helped us provide great gift bag goodies for guests and also gave them a chance to have a tasting of an array of Magners ciders. We also had Ashley, a Magners Irish Cider representative on hand to assist guests with the tasting and give them information about the Magners brand, including facts and tips for cooking with hard cider.

I did get a chance to sample some of the hard ciders myself, as the event ended, and I have to say that the pear cider is definitely my favorite. I know others were really enjoying the cider as well, and I saw one guest order the drink Jay’Gail Sangria: A refreshing blend of Magners Cider, Peach Schnapps and Fruit Liqueurs & squeezes. Sounds delicious!

In addition to the tasting and information from Ashley, who was a wealth of Magners knowledge, Laurie also spoke about ways in which guests could pair hard cider in their cooking & baking. We also gave out a recipe booklet that included recipes featuring Magners Irish Cider— including a cider bread and a honey cider chicken, a recipe created by Raglan Road Chef Kevin Dundon (see my blog post about my fantastic Food & Wine Festival experience with Chef Kevin HERE). After the event, I actually made the cider bread, the honey cider chicken and a homemade apple crisp all with Magners Irish Cider. I’ll be posting a review of that with a link to it here. Suffice it to say, I adored all of these dishes and found them perfect for the fall season!

After tastings, guests then got a chance to order a lunch (*Note: guests paid for any food or drink they consumed) which featured those amazing fish & chips, along with several vegetarian and vegan options.

Our custom menu for the lunch & learn

I have to say that our servers Toni & Jennifer were fantastic. Right from the very beginning, they were there with a smile offering our guests any assistance that they needed. It was a busy event and they also had other tables to work with throughout the restaurant! Kudos to all of their hard work and for their diligence with special diets offerings for the guests. They rock! If you get the chance to head to Raglan Road for a meal and are lucky enough to get them as servers, you will be well taken care of.

After guests ordered, Laurie began a portion of her talk on gluten free flours. Many guests came specifically so they could hear Laurie speak and to ask her questions, and I know that the information that she shared was really useful for me as well.

In between the talk, the head chef for Raglan Road came out to speak with our guests about the special diets options and why Raglan Road focuses on gluten free dishes. It was truly a treat to have the chef come out and speak with the guests about this. As someone who has a special diet myself, I always really appreciate the time that chefs take to come out and discuss options, as well as share the restaurant’s food philosophy.

After the chef came out, Laurie finished the remaining portion of her discussion on gluten free flours, as well as recipes highlighting Magners Irish Cider, as well as our other sponsor Mary’s Gone Crackers. Laurie created separate recipe booklets for both of our sponsors, which included tons of great recipes. The recipe booklet for Mary’s Gone Crackers contained a vegan cheeseball recipe (I’ve got to try this!), as well as a Mary’s Gone Crackers crusted chicken or tofu dish. We also had Mary’s Gone Crackers Just the Crumbs on hand for guests to sample. Overall, guests were able to get a lot of great baking and cooking tips and tricks and recipes that they could take home with them!

The food was a wonderful addition to lunch & learn. Paired with a Magners Irish Cider, these dishes really gave guests the essence of terrific Irish food. I myself had to get the gluten free & dairy free fish and chips. I just can’t go to Raglan Road without getting these. I adore the tartar sauce that accompanies this dish.

And of course, no event is complete without gift bags & raffle items. We had generous gift bags that included swag from Magners Irish Cider as well as Mary’s Gone Crackers. Guests also had the chance to win really great raffle prizes from our various special diets & Disney related vendors. Here is a list of the vendors who generously provided items for our lunch & learn:

  • A Wish Upon a Charm
  • A&J Bakery
  • Ah!laska
  • Allerbling

  • Taste Up Foods

Overall, this was a really fun event. It was totally different from the other events that we hosted, and I loved that. It really highlighted the amazing gluten free offerings and special diets accommodations that Raglan Road Irish Pub offers and allowed us to combine, not only great GF food but also great GF drinks and snacks. Magners Irish Cider was a real treat for our guests, and it really was great during Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival which can often be difficult for those of us who have a special diet. There were certainly no restrictions at this event! And, of course, Laurie‘s terrific talk inspired guests to bake confidently gluten free & food allergy free!

Big thanks again to Lorraine, Alan, Shannon, Toni, Jennifer and the rest of the Raglan Road Team for helping us make this event happen. And thanks to our sponsors, Magners Irish Cider and Mary’s Gone Crackers. They made our event much tastier!

2013 Welcome Breakfast Recap

December 1, 2013 by Sarah No Comments
Welcome Breakfast Downtown Disney

Here is a recap of the Welcome Breakfast held during the 2nd Annual Special Diets Dessert Party Weekend. It feels like just yesterday that Laurie Sadowski, the Allergy-Free Cook, and I were planning these events. I can’t believe it was a month and 1/2 ago! Laurie and I wanted to kick off our dessert party weekend with a terrific (and free) event that could give our guests a chance to mix and mingle with each other before the Lunch & Learn at Raglan Road Irish Pub sponsored by Magners Irish Cider and Mary’s Gone Crackers and the Dessert Party held in Epcot. We were so thrilled to work with Babycakes NYC which has a location in Downtown Disney and Enjoy Life Foods.

http://enjoylifefoods.com/
This event was generously sponsored by Enjoy Life Foods
http://babycakesnyc.com/
Our event was held at Babycakes NYC in Downtown Disney

Both of these terrific companies help make this event possible – Babycakes NYC for opening of their facilities to our group prior to the building actually being open and for offering lots of terrific breakfast goodies (yum, can you say mini donuts?!) and Enjoy Life Foods for generously sponsoring the event and providing tons of goodies for our guests to take home with them. Talk about two great companies! They both truly represent excellence in the food allergy industry and provide much needed and safe items for guests. And the great thing about these companies is that you can readily get their products throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. Babycakes NYC serves many restaurant locations and kiosks, as well as quick service locations (I’ve scored myself a ridiculous amount of mini cupcakes in them!) and Enjoy Life Foods is equally present throughout the parks – from the restaurants to quick service locations and even the Food Allergy Information Kiosk in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. To say that they are staples in WDW is an understatement!

Our event began bright and early at 9 a.m. at Babycakes NYC. Because this was a low-key event, guests could come in, grab some breakfast goodies, and just chat. I was thrilled we had the venue to ourselves for a good 30 minutes of the event.

In addition to the breakfast goodies, Laurie and I had gathered a variety of items from Etsy & special diets vendors who provided great product to be given away through a raffle. Here are a list of vendors whose products were available at the Welcome Breakfast either in our raffle or in our gift bags:

  • A Wish Upon a Charm
  • A&J Bakery
  • Ah!laska
  • Allergbling
  • Allermates
  • Crafts by Courtney
  • Crunchmaaster
  • Dreaded Wheat Designs

  • Picturing Disney
  • Popsalot
  • Schar
  • Taste Up Foods
  • Two Prince Bakery

Items provided by our generous vendors
I admit, I was having way too much fun chatting with everyone & assisting Laurie with our raffle prizes, that I really didn’t get many photos of the festivities. However, you can see lots of photos from the weekend over on Pinterest (find the weekend event board HERE).
Overall, it was a terrific few hours at Babycakes NYC and a terrific opportunity to meet so many great folks who also have special dietary needs. I hope that everyone who attended had a great time enjoying the goodies and festivities! A big thanks again to Enjoy Life Foods & Babycakes NYC for helping us make this event happen!

2013 Dessert Party Recap

November 21, 2013 by Sarah 7 Comments
Illuminations Photo

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost a month since the dessert party weekend hosted by myself and food allergy cookbook author Laurie Sadowski. It seems like the month has just flown by, post-event and it feels like just yesterday we were busily planning all of the events!

This is a recap of the 2nd Annual Special Diets Dessert party. I’ll be recapping & highlighting the Welcome Breakfast hosted at Babycakes NYC in Downtown Disney and sponsored by Enjoy Life and the Lunch & Learn at Raglan Road Irish Pub sponsored by Magners Irish Cider and Mary’s Gone Crackers in another post. This recap is all about desserts!

*Big thanks to Krista Joy from Disneyways.com for sharing her amazing photos from the event (they turned out way better than the ones I attempted to take) and for also covering the event for WDWNT News Today. You can read her full recap on the WDWNT News Today site HERE.

As with any event, it all starts with an idea. Little did I know that last year when I came up with the idea to host a special diets dessert party that it would provide me the opportunity to create a series of events celebrating special diets. Our first party, co-hosted by Allergy Free Mouse, was held in December 2012. There was such a positive response that I came up with the idea to host another one—and the most requested dates all revolved around one theme – Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival! Like me, so many of you were interested in having a special event where you could enjoy Food & Wine Festival inspired offerings while eating safe food. And so the 2nd Annual Special Diets Desert Party was set for October 13, 2013.

This year’s event could not have taken place without the generous support of many special diets vendors & Disney related sites and companies. I cannot begin to thank each of those folks enough for all that they did to help make this event a reality! Here is a list of our generous sponsors. I encourage you to check out their sites, services, and products! This is an amazing group of people.

Our Platinum Sponsor for this event was Mousekejournals. This amazing Disney directory site, offers you a taste of all things Disney! Their support & partnership in this event was amazing!

Gold Sponsors:

  • Crunchmaster
  • Disney Dining
  • Goldbaums
  • Mary’s Gone Crackers
  • Mousecation
  • Orlando Theme Park Shoppers
  • Popsalot
  • The Spice & Tea Exchange
  • Theme Park Concierges
  • Walt Disney World Made Easy for Everyone

Silver Sponsors:

  • Allergy Free Mouse
  • Chip and Co.
  • Mouseketrips
  • My Dreams of Disney
  • Taste Up Foods
Chef Dennis from Disney’s Catered Events

I work really closely with Disney’s Catered Events & Event Planning to make sure our menu is free of the top 8 common allergens but not free of flavor. This year I asked them create a Food & Wine Festival inspired menu. They came up with a lot of dishes and we eventually narrowed it down to the following:

  • All American Chocolate Bacon Whoopee Pies
  • French Apple Coquotte
  • Green Tea & Ginger Spiced Glazed Donuts
  • Mexican Cinnamon Chocolate Drops
  • Chocolate Ganache Chocolate Drops
  • Chocolate Brownie Bites

Disney’s Catered Events always goes above and beyond to provide safe and delicious desserts and they did a great job this time. I really enjoyed all of the dishes and thought they were really fun and unique. Chef Dennis worked with us this year and he really tried to make sure that everything was just right. The kitchen originally utilized Namaste and Bob’s Red Mill All Purpose Mix; however, at the last minute they changed the mixes to only be Namaste due to a legume allergy in our party. It was great to know that the kitchen was adept at making changes and making sure our guests were safe at the party! The list of ingredients was provided to guests ahead of time and as requested. Chef Dennis was also on hand at the party itself to consult with guests who had special dietary needs and to take care of specially prepared plates for guests who had allergies not covered by the top 8.

In addition to this awesome dessert buffet (which was all you can eat and quickly devoured!), guests also had the chance to have a private and up-close view of IllumiNations. I have to say, it’s one of my favorite things about these parties—the view is just spectacular!

As if this wasn’t enough, guests also get the opportunity to enjoy swag from their favorite special diets vendors. Each guest received a gift bag with tote bags provided by Magical Vacations by Me which included a bounty of treats, both food and non-food related. In addition, guests also received giveaways that included large gift baskets, t-shirts, free product coupons, CDs, full size products and more. See the vendor page for a complete list of vendors who donated to the event HERE.

This year’s event was so much fun. I truly enjoyed meeting each and every guest, seeing familiar faces, and just watching as guests enjoyed eating safe and delicious desserts. Disney helped make this a really special event, and I enjoy working with them every year to make this happen. It was truly a magical evening!

Do you want this event hosted again next year?

Let me know what time of year you’d like to see it take place!

NoNuttin/Libre Naturals — Sponsor — Dessert Party — Review

October 27, 2013 by Sarah No Comments
No'Nuttin Libre Naturals Oatmeal

Libre Naturals is the home company of the brand NoNuttin’ which donated terrific products to both years we’ve held the Special Diets Dessert Parties, and I’ve been so thrilled to work with their terrific team. I’m even more thrilled to have been able to offer products that are free, not only of the top 8 common allergens but that cover the top 11 allergens and are produced in a facility free of those ingredients. How awesome is that?! For our 2nd Annual Special Diets Dessert Party, we received the terrific double chocolate chunk granola bars. To say these are decadent is an understatement!

However, one of the great new products that the NoNuttin brand has out now are oatmeal cups, which are individually packaged, allergy friendly and great portable breakfast and snack options. If you’re busy like me, it’s a welcome treat to have something easily made that’s healthful in the morning. I was able to try out their oatmeal cups, and I was thrilled at that chance. All you do is add hot water and let sit, then eat!  They currently have 4 varieties of oatmeal cups: Daily Hug, Pacific Coast Morning, Sunny Start, and Morning Mojo. Here’s a rundown of the flavors.

Morning Mojo:

This was the first flavor I tried (and note, I ate these over the course of a week, so I didn’t down that much oatmeal in one sitting!). The ingredients included: whole grain certified gluten free oats, evaporated cane sugar, raw sunflower seeds, dried blueberries,  dried apples, cinnamon, sea salt.

What I liked about this flavor is that it had a lot of texture and a hint of sweetness to it. I loved the sunflower seeds in it. It added a nice crunch to the oatmeal. I also liked the mix of fruit and the cinnamon in this. I was super surprised at how easy this was to make! You know what the means…more oatmeal!

Sunny Start:

For my next flavor, I tried Sunny Start which includes: whole grain certified gluten free oats, evaporated cane sugar, raw sunflower seeds, raisins, dried cranberries,  sea salt. This was another flavor that had a lot of texture to it. I liked the raisins a lot! For some reason I like them more than blueberries, and to me they matched really well with the cranberries and sunflower seeds. This was definitely a winner for me.

Daily Hug:

This is exactly the flavor you think of when you imagine cool winter days. It includes whole grain certified gluten free oats, evaporated cane sugar, dried apples, cinnamon, sea salt. Essentially, this is the apple cinnamon oatmeal you’ve been dreaming of! Healthful and nostalgic all at the same time. This was another one of my favorites. Actually, it’s hard to say that because I really loved all the flavors. But if you like apples & cinnamon–this flavor is for you!

Pacific Coast Morning:

This was perhaps the least sweet out of all the flavors. With whole grain certified gluten free oats, evaporated cane sugar, dried cranberries, dried blueberries, sea salt.Neither the blueberries or the cranberries are super sweet, so it provided a nice mild flavor.

Overall, I was a big fan of these oatmeal cups. The convenience alone was a big draw for me. Add in the fact that it’s free of the top 11 allergens and also delicious–well, that’s a hit to me! My favorite flavors, if I had to choose, were the Daily Hug and Sunny Start. I pretty much could eat those every day if I had them on hand. They were a great breakfast that I could take either to work or eat at home.

It’s terrific that companies like Libre Naturals offers such a variety in products and also ones that are great for families and people on the go. It’s amazing to know that they provide safe and delicious options for those of us with special diets that meet our busy lifestyle needs! For more information about Libre Naturals, you can visit their site: http://librenaturals.com/ Now if we could just NoNuttin products locally in my town, I’d be a happy camper! If you’re visiting the Orlando area, you’re in luck! They carry NoNuttin products at Chamberlins Health Food Store.

Goldbaums — Sponsor — Dessert Party — Review

October 15, 2013 by Sarah No Comments
Gluten free Goldbaums chow mein noodles

As gold sponsor of the 2nd Annual Special Diets Dessert Party weekend, Goldbaums supplied our guests with a variety of terrific goodies to enjoy including their fabulous ice cream cones and their new quinoa crisps. You can imagine the great excitement that guests had to see truly gluten free & dairy free ice cream cones! These were certainly one of the top hits for products at the party weekend.

If you’ve not heard of Goldbaums, you are missing out on a fantastic gluten free & Kosher company. They carry a variety of products, such as natural brown rice pasta, rice & quinoa crisps, soup accompaniments, and gluten free meals, among others. The company makes sure that each product goes through rigorous testing & tasting which means you’re getting the best of the best when it comes to superior gluten free & dairy free products. All of their products are certified Kosher which is another wonderful hallmark of this company.

Cocoa Sugar Cones (my personal favorite)

Perhaps the biggest draw for me was their ice cream cones. Not only are the gluten free, GMO free and vegan but they come in several varieties including traditional vanilla wafer cups and chocolate sugar cones. I’ve never been a sugar cone I didn’t like, and this one exceeded my expectations in all ways. The cocoa sugar cone was the perfect combination of chocolate & sugar cone. Sugar cones are my personal weakness, and to say that I enjoyed these is an understatement. You can bet that I will be heading to my local Winn Dixie (where they carry Goldbaums) to grab more of these. For those that like traditional wafer cones, they will be pleased with the ones that Goldbaums makes. I may be picking up a lot of non-dairy ice cream and making sundaes for a while! It’s a rarity to get a good GF/DF ice cream cone, and this one certainly aims to please. In fact, I would say it was one of the biggest hits at our dessert party weekend festivities! There’s just something about an ice cream cone!

Traditional wafer cones

The other terrific dessert party weekend treats that we had were Goldbaums new quinoa crisps. These were so addicting! Each of our guests were treated to the three flavors of crisps: Onion & Garlic, Sea Salt, and Barbeque. Of course, you know that I had to sample some of these treats (Laurie & I needed pre-event fuel!). I adore the crispy texture of the crisps and the unique flavor. The sea salt is a nice light option which really highlights the quinoa flavor. My personal favorite was the onion & garlic which reminded me of sour cream & onion chips from my gluten & dairy eating days! Only these were much more healthful and free of any items that might make me sick. I’m not always a fan of BBQ chips but these were very mild & had a hint of smokiness. All three were definite winners for me, and I could easily see myself enjoying these as a snack or with my lunch.

Onion & Garlic were my favorites of these!

Goldbaums also supplied a few treats for both Laurie & I to sample. Laurie will be providing her review on her website (http://lauriesadowski.wordpress.com/) as well, so stay tuned for that. The first thing that I eyed that I was beyond excited to try was the Chow Mein Noodles. These are a bit of a staple at many Chinese restaurants, and they really remind me of my childhood. Long have been the days since I’ve been able to eat something like this, and I admit I always kind of crave these when I’m feeling under the weather and make egg drop soup (one of my favorite “under the weather” treats). You can bet this was one of the first things I dug into in the Goldbaums box of treats.

My new favorite soup accompaniment

I made some homemade egg drop soup and opened up that bag of Chow Mein Noodles. They are not only crunchy but they also taste like the ones I remembered from childhood. Added to soup, they were the perfect accompaniment. The didn’t get too soggy and they held up really well to the hot broth. Honestly, it made me just want to make soup over and over again just so I could eat these! I’m hoping that they have these at my local Winn Dixie; otherwise, I’m finding a way to order them online! They will be terrific during the holidays.

Three kinds of flatbread crisps

Next up are the flatbread crisps. These are so good. They make the perfect snack with some non-dairy cheese or meat added to them, or even some Daiya cream cheese! As always, I love garlic & onion flavors and so these were definitely my favorite. They are really sturdy crackers–a bit like Wasa or some other flatbread crisp. I was actually thinking that they might be really good broken up into chunks and put into a party mix (like homemade Chex mix) for the holidays. Now you know what I’m going to be doing this year…

The other item I have on hand is the gluten free brown rice pasta, which I haven’t tried yet. That’s on my list of “to-do’s” this week! Once I have tried this, I will be updating my post here so I can share my thoughts–I have no doubt that it will also be high on my list of items that I enjoy!

Overall, I can’t say enough great things about Goldbaums products. I only wish I had a chance to try all of them! From mini GF/DF croutons to GF/DF Israeli couscous and even their Wonder Meals, I kind of want to try it all.

I know both Laurie & I can’t thank Goldbaums enough for their generous support of our dessert party weekend festivities. We are so honored to have had them as a gold sponsor for our event.
